A body plan is a model morphological organization that characterizes a set of species that are part of a high-ranking taxon, generally a phylum or class. The term “Baüplan” was introduced by the German embryologist Henry Woodger (1945) and designates a structural plan common to the species of a monophyletic group. It is mainly to Haeckel (1863, 1866, 1868, 1872, 1874, 1875) to whom we owe the outline, still strongly present today, of the taxonomic division of metazoa into classes and phyla. In this respect, Haeckel is also the first to divide all metazoans into groups comprising species with similar body architecture - a structural plan. The “Haeckel Baüplan Program” models the appearance of embryonic cavities and their fate in six typical metazoans. The program takes into consideration the three primordial structural planes which characterize all metazoans, these are the acoelomate, blastocoelomate and eucoelomate structural planes.
Overview 🔎
A biology professor at the University of Mons wants to create a new way of teaching to facilitate understanding of the transition from the larval stage to the adult stage in certain animals. The goal is to create a serious game where the user can manipulate the different larval stages modeled in 3D. Intermediate videos illustrate and explain the transition from one stage to the next.
FEATURES 🎨
The main features are 3d models of the larval stages of certain animals with interaction with these models. The Integration of intermediate videos inside the application. Finaly, user can enable text informations on mouseover
CHALLENGES🤔
One of the challenges was to manage the size of the 3D models and videos for real time. I had to set up a system of Addressables which fetch the elements and then destroy them so as not to overload the memory. Another challenge was to calculate the video so that we have the impression that it is a real-time animation.
IMPACT 💥
Improvement of learning in biology lessons. The application is used in parallel of literal courses at the University of Mons
